Microtopping® covers the floor, ceiling, and selected walls of the San Ciro Fudoumae restaurant in Tokyo. The interplay of textures and materials, warm tones, and soft lighting creates a calm, sensory atmosphere that guides guests through a deep and harmonious experience.

We are in the quiet Fudōmae district of Tokyo. Here, a recently opened Italian restaurant with an ancient soul expresses a silent dialogue between food and space. The project behind the San Ciro Fudoumae restaurant is inspired by the concept of “soil,” understood as the land—the foundation of life and of culinary ingredients.

In harmony with the quiet nature of the neighborhood, the interior unfolds through layered compositions that evoke silent geological strata and diverse textures. The use of materials such as concrete, stone, and wood was a deliberate choice to transport visitors deep into the earth. For the walls, ceramic tiles with a variable firing effect (yōhen), made using nickel and manganese, were selected. No two tiles share the same color: each features a distinct shade, creating natural chromatic irregularities that lend the space an organic rhythm and a subtle sense of movement.

Microtopping®, Ideal Work’s continuous cementitious solution capable of coating any surface with a thickness of just 3 mm, was used for the floor, ceiling, and selected walls. Applied in a neutral tone, Microtopping® blends seamlessly into the space, contributing to an elegant and ethereal atmosphere. Through its materiality and visual continuity, it engages in a dialogue with the other textures present in the interior.

By focusing on the soil as an invisible point of origin, this project allows a sense of quiet to permeate the space, gently awakening the senses of those who enter and guiding them toward a deep, meaningful relationship with food.
