FAQ – microcemento
1. What is Microcement / Microtopping® / béton ciré?
Microtopping® is a registered trademark of IDEAL WORK (also commonly referred to as microcement or béton ciré). It is a thin, continuous decorative coating made from cement, water-based resins, additives, and mineral pigments. Applied in 2–3 mm layers on new or existing surfaces, it creates seamless finishes for both floors and walls. Thanks to its strong adhesion, it can be applied over tiles, marble, concrete, plaster, drywall, wood, and other substrates.
2. What is the difference between microcement and polished concrete / béton lissé?
Although they may look similar, Microtopping® is applied in very thin layers (about 2–3 mm) with a trowel and does not require expansion joints. Polished concrete, on the other hand, is poured at 75–100 mm thickness and polished using specific machines called power trowels. It requires expansion joints and heavy equipment. Microtopping® is lighter, faster to install, and can be applied on both vertical and horizontal surfaces without demolition.
3. What is microcement made of?
IDEAL WORK’s Microtopping® consists of Portland cement, fine aggregates (such as quartz), and mineral pigments, all mixed with a special liquid polymer that gives the blend its adhesive and flexible properties. The final coating consists of 2–3 very thin layers that harden into a “cement skin.” The polymer provides elasticity and adhesion, while the pigments ensure color stability.
4. On what surfaces can microcement be applied?
Thanks to its high adhesion, Microtopping® can be applied to almost all stable substrates: cement surfaces, self-levelers, terrazzo, marble, tiles, drywall, polished concrete, wood, and even old tiles. It is not suitable for surfaces that expand significantly; in such cases, the substrate must be removed or properly prepared.
5. Where is microcement not recommended?
Application is not recommended on raw wood or substrates that expand/move differently from Microtopping®, such as small-format parquet. Wooden boards with many joints may cause cracks and should therefore be removed before applying Microtopping®. Surfaces with permanent moisture must also be waterproofed before installation. Microtopping® is also not recommended in areas with permanent water contact, such as pools and fountains.
6. What is the thickness of microcement?
Microtopping® has a very reduced overall thickness, usually between 2 and 3 mm. This minimal thickness means there’s no need to cut doors and is sufficient for coating floors, walls, and furniture.
7. Can microcement be applied over existing floors like tiles or marble?
Yes. One of Microtopping®’s most appreciated features is the ability to be applied directly over tiles, ceramics, marble, and even terrazzo without demolition. The substrate must be properly prepared (cleaning, sanding, and priming). If the tiles are cracked or not firmly attached, they must be fixed first. This significantly reduces renovation time and cost.
8. Can microcement be used on walls and facades?
Microtopping® is suitable for vertical surfaces. It can coat interior walls, facades, columns, and even furniture. Thanks to its excellent adhesion and seamless appearance, it creates modern, joint-free surfaces.
9. Can microcement be used in showers?
Microtopping® is perfect for coating showers and sinks. A waterproofing layer must first be applied to prevent leaks. Special “elastic fabric bands” are needed in corners and wall/floor joints to allow the two surfaces to expand without letting water through. Three protective resin coats are necessary to ensure complete water resistance.
10. Is microcement suitable for stairs?
Yes. The material adheres well to steps; the substrate must be stable, and in some cases, corners should be reinforced with aluminum profiles to prevent wear. Depending on the structure of the staircase (wood, metal, concrete), proper preparation must follow IDEAL WORK’s guidelines.
11. Can microcement be used in bathrooms, showers, or humid environments?
Microtopping® is ideal for bathrooms, showers, and wet zones. We recommend applying 2–3 layers of sealer (polyurethane resin) to ensure water resistance and ease of cleaning. IDEAL WORK also offers 100% waterproof solutions even without resin. These products have a different formulation from microcement but offer the same seamless look. IDEAL WORK’s product SOLIDRO is ideal for these applications.
12. Is microcement suitable for kitchens, countertops, and furniture?
Microtopping® resists moderate heat and stains, making it ideal for countertops, backsplashes, and kitchen furniture. However, hot pots should never be placed directly on the surface—always use trivets. Our Microtopping® is widely used to coat furniture, furnishings, and doors.
13. Can microcement be used outdoors (terraces, pools)?
Yes. Microtopping® can be used outdoors without problems. However, IDEAL WORK does not recommend it for pools.
14. Is microcement compatible with underfloor heating?
Microtopping® can be applied over radiant floors; a heating protocol must be followed to prevent cracks from thermal expansion. This includes starting the system at low temperature, gradually increasing it, and turning it off before application to avoid rapid drying. After application, it should be restarted gradually. Thanks to its low thickness, Microtopping® ensures excellent thermal conductivity and enhances the performance of the underfloor heating system. Follow IDEAL WORK’s heating system guidelines.
15. Does the old surface need to be removed before applying microcement?
Generally, no. If the existing surface is stable and free of cracks larger than 2 mm, Microtopping® can be applied directly after adequate preparation. If irregularities are more severe or the substrate is made of small wood pieces, removal and leveling may be necessary.
16. Is a building permit required to apply microcement?
No. Microtopping® installation does not generate debris and does not alter structural elements, so building permits are generally not required. This greatly reduces time and bureaucracy compared to traditional renovations.
17. Who should install microcement? Can I do it myself?
For a long-lasting result, application should be done by qualified installers trained by the manufacturer. IDEAL WORK sells its products only through authorized installers who have attended specific training courses. These installers are also supported by specialized technicians during their initial projects to ensure proper application. Only professional installation can guarantee high-quality results.
18. Is it necessary to trim or plane doors after applying microcement?
No. With a thickness of just 1–3 mm, Microtopping® usually does not require door modifications. Doors are typically installed with a 5 mm tolerance from the floor, which is sufficient to accommodate the added thickness.
19. Is microcement resistant and durable?
Yes. Despite its thinness, Microtopping® offers excellent mechanical and abrasion resistance. IDEAL WORK uses two-component sealers that provide high hardness, comparable to premium parquet flooring. Durability depends on surface preparation, product quality, chosen finish, and final protection.
20. Can microcement scratch or stain easily?
Microtopping® surfaces are protected by polyurethane sealers that make them resistant to scratches and stains. However, it is advisable to use felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects. In high-traffic areas like shops or public spaces, periodic maintenance with specific cleaners and protective waxes is recommended, or the sealer can be renewed after a few years.
21. Does microcement crack or develop fissures?
Microtopping® rarely cracks on its own; cracks usually result from movement in the substrate. To reduce this risk, fiber meshes and elastic primers are used, and application is done only on consolidated substrates. The special formulation of Microtopping® offers a high degree of flexibility to prevent many types of cracking. Proper substrate preparation by a certified IDEAL WORK installer is crucial to avoid future fissures.
22. Is microcement anti-slip?
Yes. The slip resistance of Microtopping® depends on the surface texture and type of sealer used. IDEAL WORK offers three texture levels: smooth, light texture, and orange peel. Each level provides a different degree of slip resistance, suitable for various needs. All IDEAL WORK solutions come with European and international certifications. Your certified installer will recommend the best solution for your project.
23. Is microcement waterproof?
Microtopping® becomes water-resistant with the application of quality polyurethane sealers. In bathrooms and showers, it is essential to seal thoroughly to prevent water infiltration, and an additional layer of product is recommended for these areas. IDEAL WORK also offers a product called SOLIDRO, which, while not a cement-based microtopping, provides a seamless, waterproof surface without resin due to its hybrid formulation.
24. Is microcement cold to the touch or underfoot?
No. Microtopping® provides a pleasant tactile sensation. When combined with underfloor heating, it offers exceptional comfort.
25. Is microcement resistant to high temperatures or thermal shock?
Once applied, Microtopping® can withstand both low and high temperatures. IDEAL WORK applies its products in over 80 countries worldwide. In winter, the application environment should be heated to 15–18°C to ensure proper curing. In summer, avoid working during the hottest hours to prevent rapid drying and thermal expansion. In kitchens, the surface should be protected from direct contact with hot pots.
26. Is microcement UV-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, Microtopping® is formulated for outdoor applications and is resistant to UV rays and weather conditions. IDEAL WORK’s pigments are UV-stable and maintain their color even when exposed to sunlight. However, it is advisable to avoid very intense shades, especially blue and green tones, for outdoor use.
27. How is microcement cleaned?
Daily cleaning requires only water and a neutral soap. Avoid using aggressive products such as bleach, ammonia, or acidic cleaners. Use a broom or microfiber mop, and periodically apply water-diluted self-polishing waxes to restore protection. IDEAL WORK offers a range of specific cleaning and maintenance products. Ask your trusted installer for advice.
28. Which cleaning products should be avoided on microcement?
Avoid harsh detergents (bleach, chlorine, ammonia, acids) as they can damage the protective film. Use only neutral detergents specifically formulated for Microtopping® or parquet. IDEAL WORK provides a full line of suitable products.
29. How long does microcement last? Does it fade over time?
When sealed and maintained properly, Microtopping® retains its color and shine for many years. The inorganic pigments used are light-stable, and IDEAL WORK guarantees that the color won’t fade or deteriorate. Like all mineral surfaces (cement, concrete), Microtopping® ages naturally, gaining a refined “lived-in” appearance. Over time, the surface can be refreshed with a new coat of protective resin. If a new look or color is desired after a few years, the surface can be sanded and the last two layers reapplied without repeating the entire application cycle.
30. What colors and finishes are available for microcement?
Microtopping® is highly customizable. A wide range of colors and textures is available. IDEAL WORK provides a color chart with over 70 base colors, plus infinite variations created by mixing shades. NCS color references can also be matched. Different colors can even be combined on the same surface.
31. Can designs, logos, or stencils be created with microcement?
Yes. Microtopping® allows for the creation of custom stencils and designs thanks to the material’s workability. IDEAL WORK can also personalize coatings with logos, text, and combinations of multiple colors.
32. How much does Microtopping® cost per square meter?
The price depends on several factors: the type of Microtopping® finish, the condition of the substrate, the size of the area, number of colors, and type of application. Pricing also differs between floors and walls. As a general guideline, professional applications cost between €90–150 per m². Small areas like bathrooms or furniture (5–15 m²) are usually priced as a lump sum rather than per m². Only a professional installer can provide an accurate quote after an on-site inspection.
33. Does the price of microcement vary depending on the type of surface?
Application costs are generally similar across different surfaces but may increase if the substrate is in poor condition or requires preparation (self-leveling compounds, extra mesh, etc.). Geographical location and complexity (e.g. stairs, multiple colors) also affect the price. Wall applications are usually less expensive due to simpler preparation. Small zones such as furniture or bathrooms are typically quoted as a lump sum.
34. Is it necessary to use a reinforcing mesh with microcement?
Using fiberglass mesh is recommended for problematic surfaces (existing cracks, different substrates) to prevent cracking due to substrate movement. The final decision is made by the certified IDEAL WORK installer after the site inspection.
35. What is the drying time between layers and the final setting time of microcement?
Each Microtopping® layer must dry before the next is applied. Under normal conditions (20°C, 60% humidity), drying takes about 3–4 hours. Higher humidity and lower temperatures will slow drying. After the final Microtopping® layer is applied, it’s best to wait at least 12–18 hours before applying the sealer. The surface can be walked on carefully after 48 hours and reaches full hardness after about 7 days.
36. Is microcement eco-friendly or sustainable?
IDEAL WORK’s Microtopping® is water-based, free from harmful substances, VOC-free, and LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Additionally, Microtopping® can renovate existing surfaces without demolition, reducing waste and material consumption
37. Does microcement require special maintenance in high-traffic areas?
For surfaces subject to heavy traffic (shops, offices), periodic application of protective waxes or sealers is recommended. IDEAL WORK also offers high-resistance solutions such as Architop and Solidro. A proper maintenance plan will extend the lifespan of Microtopping®. A detailed maintenance manual is available from IDEAL WORK.
38. Is microcement suitable for stores, boutiques, or commercial spaces?
Yes. Microtopping® offers a modern, seamless look, is easy to clean, and can be customized. Ask your IDEAL WORK installer for the best solution for your project.
39. What happens if a heavy or sharp object falls on microcement?
Microtopping® behaves similarly to wood surfaces—impacts can damage the surface, leaving marks or chips. It is advisable to avoid dropping sharp objects and to protect surfaces where possible. Minor damage can be repaired by sanding and reapplying the sealer.
40. How can scratches or damage to microcement be repaired?
For superficial scratches, the affected area can be lightly sanded and resealed. Larger damage requires intervention by a professional installer, who can reapply a Microtopping® layer and reseal it. It’s also possible to “touch up” the surface by spraying a light layer of tinted resin.
41. Is it always necessary to apply a sealer or protective layer over microcement?
Yes. The final polyurethane sealer provides hardness, waterproofing, and ease of maintenance. IDEAL WORK’s polyurethane sealer prevents staining and allows for a matte, satin, or glossy finish. Without sealing, Microtopping® remains porous and delicate, similar to untreated concrete. IDEAL WORK also offers SOLIDRO, which is 100% resistant to water and liquid penetration, and does not absorb water thanks to its non-cementitious formulation.
42. How and how often should microcement be maintained?
Regular cleaning should be done based on usage (with IDEAL WORK’s “Perfetto!” cleaner). Ideal-Care or similar products should be applied every few months depending on traffic. To maintain protection, avoid standing water and renew the sealer every few years in heavily used areas.
43. Is microcement hypoallergenic or hygienic?
Yes. Being a continuous, joint-free surface, Microtopping® does not trap dust, mites, or mold and is easy to clean. It is a hygienic solution for both homes and public spaces.
44. What are the main advantages of microcement compared to other finishes?
Microtopping® offers seamless finishes with high aesthetic value, low thickness, excellent adhesion to various substrates, a wide color range, fast installation, and easy cleaning. It is lighter and requires less equipment than polished concrete. It allows renovation without demolition, saving time and money.
45. What types of microcement are available?
IDEAL WORK offers Microtopping® in various granulometries (BASE COAT, HP COAT, FINISH COAT) for floors and walls: coarse versions are more resistant, while fine versions provide smoother surfaces. IDEAL WORK also offers 100% waterproof continuous surfaces (e.g., SOLIDRO) and specific solutions for outdoor use.
46. Is microcement antistatic or fire-resistant?
Microtopping® does not generate static electricity and, thanks to its mineral components, is non-combustible. IDEAL WORK also provides fire resistance certifications for Microtopping® according to European and American standards.
47. Can different colors be combined on the same microcement surface?
Yes. It is possible to mark out areas and apply different Microtopping® colors to create custom designs. IDEAL WORK also offers various finishes (rough, lightly textured, smooth) that can be combined within the same room.
48. Is special treatment needed before applying microcement?
Before application, the surface must be sound, clean, level, and have less than 5% humidity. Oil, dust, or paint residues must be removed and a primer applied to promote adhesion. Cracks should be filled with epoxy resin. For gypsum or drywall surfaces, it is recommended to use IDEAL WORK Primer before applying Microtopping®.
49. Can I change the color or refresh an existing microcement floor?
Yes. The surface can be easily refreshed: sand the floor, apply 1–2 coats of Microtopping®, and reapply the protective resin. Changing the color is also possible. Contact IDEAL WORK installers for a quote.

Contact IDEAL WORK through our website, and we will connect you with the closest Microtopping® installer.
66. What distinguishes one microcement from another?
There are many differences between a basic microcement and IDEAL WORK’s Microtopping®. Many low-cost microcements are single-component systems where polymers are dry-blended with cement and aggregates. While cheaper, their performance is significantly lower. Another major difference is the manufacturer’s expertise. IDEAL WORK has specialized in cement-based flooring since 1997, focusing from day one on commercial applications (shops, hotels, amusement parks), gaining extensive experience. Many competitors come from the decorative paint sector and lack experience in flooring. This difference is even more evident in the profile of the installers: IDEAL WORK applicators typically have a flooring background, while those from decorative paint companies are often painters or decorators with little flooring-specific experience.
67. Do you produce microcement with metallic or special effect finishes?
Yes. The IDEAL WORK product range includes, in addition to traditional Microtopping®, hybrid 100% waterproof solutions (SOLIDRO), metallic surfaces (PUROMETALLO), polished concrete (ARCHITOP), and terrazzo (LIXIO).
